COLERAINE, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams completed the second leg of the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Championships over the weekend at Mt. Itasca, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College. For the second straight weekend it was men's sophomore Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) and women's sophomore Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) leading the way in both Saturday's classic and Sunday's freestyle races.
Nichols had the top finish of the weekend, placing 12th in the 10-kilometer classic on Saturday with a time of 27:21.5 before racing to a 17th-place finish in the 20K freestyle (59:25.3) on Sunday. Junior Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) also had a top-20 finish in the classic, placing 20th in 27:37.7.
Mucha raced to a 14th-place showing in the 15K freestyle on the meet's final day, crossing the line in 50:38.9. The standout sophomore also had a strong showing in the 5K classic on Saturday, finishing 19th in 16:03.5. Sophomore Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) finished in the top-20 in Sunday's freestyle event, placing 18th in 51:46.4.
Next on the schedule for the Phoenix is the NCAA Central Region Championships, held Feb. 23-24 in Houghton, Mich.
