GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - New
Green Bay volleyball head coach Michaela
Franklin announced on Tuesday the hiring of Patrick Bowlin as the team's assistant coach, beginning with the
2013 season. Bowlin spent the 2012 campaign as a volunteer assistant coach at
Marquette, where Franklin worked as an assistant for the last four seasons
prior to being hired
at Green Bay on Jan. 8.
"I am thrilled to have Patrick join the Green Bay
volleyball family," Franklin said. "Patrick brings a positive energy to the
program along with a tireless work ethic. His passion, determination and
commitment to success are the reasons why he is the perfect fit for our
program."
Bowlin and Franklin helped
guide Marquette to a 27-7 overall record and an at-large bid to the NCAA
Tournament in 2012. The Golden Eagles went 13-2 in conference play, finishing
second in the BIG EAST. Bowlin's primary responsibilities included on-court
training, leading the scout team during practice, video exchange and opponent
video breakdown. He also assisted with recruiting efforts, stat organization
and running Marquette Volleyball Camps.
"Working with Patrick at
Marquette was a great pleasure, and I am honored to be able to continue to work
with someone with such high character," Franklin said. "His loyalty and
kindness will make him a fantastic recruiter right away. He has done an amazing
job of building relationships within the volleyball community in his home state
of Minnesota, and I know he will continue to do the same in Wisconsin."
Prior to his time at
Marquette, Bowlin worked as a student assistant coach at the College of Saint
Benedict in Minnesota during the 2011 season. Saint Benedict went 18-13,
including an 8-3 record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(MIAC), and earned a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Bowlin also has coaching
experience at the club level, serving as the head coach for the Saint Benedict
women's club team in 2010-11. In addition, he has worked as a coach at a variety
of camps throughout Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
A Winona, Minn., native, Bowlin
graduated from St. John's University in Minnesota in 2012 with a bachelor's
degree in elementary education. He was also a two-year starter at outside
hitter and setter on the St. John's men's club volleyball team from 2010-12.
Franklin took the reins of
the Green Bay volleyball program from Debbie
Kirch, who resigned from the position in November after 16 seasons to take
an Assistant AD role in the athletics department. Franklin and Bowlin will
welcome back senior setter Leah Poel
(Jenison, Mich.), a group of four senior hitters that combined for 952 kills in
2012 and three other letterwinners.
