- The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams competed at the Central
Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Championships over the weekend, hosted by
Northern Michigan University at the Al Quaal Recreation Area. The Phoenix squads
participated in the freestyle sprint races on Saturday and the classic relays
on Sunday.
Highlighting
the conference meet for Green Bay was sophomore Kailey Mucha's (Soldotna, Alaska) performance in Saturday's sprint
finals. Mucha raced to a second-place finish with a time of 4:19.70, just four
seconds back from the winning time of 4:15.30 by Alaska Fairbanks' Marit
Rjabov. Sophomore Hanne Guthrie
(Chanhassen, Minn.) also advanced to the freestyle sprint finals, placing 18th
in 4:27.80.
Sophomore
Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) was the
top finisher for the Phoenix men on Saturday, finishing 13th in the sprint.
Nichols completed the 1.6-kilometer course in 3:39.10.
In
the classic relay races on Sunday, the Green Bay men and women each had two
teams of three skiers in the field. The top Phoenix women's squad, consisting
of Mucha, Guthrie and Katie Burger
(Hayward, Wis.), finished ninth out of 14 teams in the 3x5K race with a time of
43:19.7. For the men, Matt Nichols, Chris Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) and Eddie
Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) placed 10th out of 15 squads in the 3x10K event
in 1:13:13.8.
The
Green Bay Nordic skiing teams are next in action on Feb. 16-17 at the Gustavus
Adolphus Invitational in Coleraine, Minn.
