GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
- The Green Bay men's basketball team learned its final non-conference opponent
on Monday evening when the ESPN BracketBusters were announced, and the Phoenix
will face Drake from the Missouri Valley Conference on Saturday, Feb. 23 at
7:05 p.m. in Des Moines, Iowa. The 2012-13 season is the final year for the
BracketBusters contests, but Drake will now visit Green Bay to play the Phoenix
in one of the next two seasons.
Drake is currently 11-11 on the season and 5-6 in
conference play, but the Bulldogs have won five of their last seven games and
three in a row at home. That stretch which includes a 74-69 win over No. 17/12
Creighton on Jan. 23 and a 74-71 overtime victory over Indiana State on Feb. 2.
Green Bay's contest in Des Moines at the Knapp Center
will not only be the team's last non-conference game of the regular season but
also will give Phoenix senior Brennan
Cougill (Sioux City, Iowa) a chance to once again play in his home state. Cougill,
a former Iowa Mr. Basketball, is averaging 11.2 points and 6.1 rebounds this
season.
The only all-time meeting between Green Bay and the
Bulldogs was also at Drake, with the Phoenix falling 68-61 on Dec. 3, 1984.
The Phoenix has a 4-5 record in nine previous
BracketBusters contests, including a 54-49 home victory over Eastern Michigan
on Feb. 18, 2012. It will be the fifth time that Green Bay has played against a
Missouri Valley opponent, having previously played against Northern Iowa,
Illinois State, Indiana State and Southern Illinois.
Green Bay has four crucial Horizon League games before
its contest at Drake. The Phoenix host Wright State (Thursday, 7 p.m.) and
Detroit (Saturday, 1 p.m.) this week at the Resch Center.
