INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's swimming and diving squad captured the team title at the Butler Invitational on Sunday in Indianapolis, finishing with 778 points to top the four-team men's field consisting of Xavier, Ball State and IUPUI.
Senior diver Mitchell Spaeth (Fredonia, Wis.) had a strong day on the boards to pace the Phoenix, winning the 1-meter event with a score of 300.90 while also placing second on the 3-meter board with a score of 300.85. Freshman Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) also turned in a solid day in the pool, winning the 400-yard IM in 4:07.99 and finishing third in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.69).
Other top performances for the Phoenix on Sunday included Jonathan Lesniak's (McHenry, Ill.) second-place finish in the 100 breast (59.04), Robert Miner's (Madison, Wis.) runner-up finish in the 200 butterfly (1:54.58) and Casey Murphy's (Sun Prairie, Wis.) second-place effort in the 100 freestyle (47.83).
Both Green Bay swimming and diving teams are next in action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host in-state Horizon League rival Milwaukee for Senior Day at 2 p.m. at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium. It will serve as the teams' final tune-up before the 2013 Horizon League Championships in Chicago Feb. 27-March 2.
