GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the first time in her career Green Bay (4-1) women's basketball senior Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) has been named Horizon League Player of the Week after leading the Phoenix to a 2-1 finish at the Cancun Challenge held November 22-24 in Cancun, Mexico.
"Sarah plays hard all the time, is an all-effort kid and in my mind deserves a lot of awards that she doesn't get recognized for," said Green Bay head coach Kevin Borseth. "I'm really glad she's on our team."
Eichler led Green Bay in the Cancun Challenge averaging 17.3 points while shooting 73 percent from the free throw line. The 5-foot-11 forward poured in a career-high 26 points and career high five three pointers in 27 minutes of play in Green Bay's dominant 79-48 win over Richmond in its final game of the tournament. Eichler was also strong on the boards, averaging 5.3 per contest throughout the three games.
Averaging 33 minutes per contest, Eichler is second for the Phoenix in scoring with 16.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 65-percent shooting from the free throw line.
Known for her defensive play, Eichler has been working on becoming an all-around player, picking up right where she left off in postseason play in 2011-12. Eichler poured in four three pointers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament game against Iowa State after averaging 12.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in the Horizon League Championship.
