GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After
breaking a pair of school records over the weekend, Green Bay volleyball senior
Brittany Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) has
been tabbed as this week's Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week, the
conference office announced on Monday. It marks the sixth time Groth has earned
such honors, and the third time in 2012.
Groth became
Green Bay's career digs leader on Friday, posting a match-high 27 in her
team's 3-0 victory at Wright State. Despite recording just six digs as a
freshman in 2009, the senior's career total is now at 1,836, moving her ahead
of former Phoenix standout Megan Elfering, who had 1,789 from 2005-08. The 27
digs on Friday were the second-most by a Green Bay player in a three-set match,
just two shy of her
own school record of 29 which she set earlier this season against Auburn.
The libero's second
record of the weekend came in Saturday's regular season finale at
Valparaiso, where she tallied a team-high 22 digs to push her season total to
665. The total broke her own single-season standard of 659, which she set last
year as a junior.
"Our senior class
continues to make an impact on our record book," Green Bay head coach Debbie Kirch said. "It was certainly a
big weekend for Brittany, not only breaking the career digs record, but also
the season record. What makes it even more impressive is that she didn't start
wearing the libero jersey until almost half way through her sophomore season.
She has done a lot in a short period of time, and I'm very proud of how far she
has come."
Groth, who also earned conference
player of the week honors on Sept.
24 and Aug.
27 this season, leads the Horizon League and ranks third in the NCAA with
6.27 digs per set. The average would break her own single-season record of
5.78, which she set in 2011.
Green Bay volleyball begins
Horizon League tournament play this Friday when the fifth-seeded Phoenix takes
on fourth-seeded Loyola at 4 p.m. CT in Cleveland, Ohio. Green Bay split its matches
with the Ramblers this season, falling
3-2 in Chicago on Oct. 6 and winning
3-0 at the Kress Center on Nov. 2.
