Phoenix Wraps up 2012 in Great Lakes District Competition

VERONA, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up competition for the 2012 season competing in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Verona, Wis. Nov. 9. The meet was the fourth for the Phoenix in its home state of Wisconsin this season. The event consisted of a 6K women's race while it was the first men's 10K event in the history of the Zimmer Course.
Having one of its best seasons in program history, the Green Bay women's team finished in 29th place overall and second among five Horizon League schools also competing.
Sarah Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.) closed her freshman campaign where she started, pacing the Phoenix. Mauel ran to a 121st-place overall finish and third among Horizon League competitors with a time of 22:32. Senior Areanna Lakowske (Sparta, Wis.) led Green Bay's upperclassmen, finishing her collegiate career in 154th place overall with a time of 23:05.
Sophomore Nicole Will (Luxemburg, Wis.) completed the 6K course in 23:43 for a 178th place finish. Freshman Jennifer Jones (Appleton, Wis.) wrapped up her first season of college competition running to a 191st place finish with a time of 24:11 while sophomore Erica Johnson (Felch, Mich.) rounded out the top 200 finishers overall while finishing fifth in scoring for the Phoenix with a time of 24:42.
Michigan won the women's team event scoring 41 points while rival Michigan State was second with 77 team points.
On the men's side junior Alexander Kimble (Green Bay, Wis.) paced the Phoenix in 161st place with a time of 34:41. Sophomore Andrew Sorenson (Onalaska, Wis.) crossed the line in 192nd place with a time of 36:45 followed by Steven Wagner (Seymour, Wis.) in 37:24.
Senior Evan Wachter (Plymouth, Wis.) closed his college career with a time of 37:39 while freshman Samuel Evans (Woodbury, Wis.) rounded out the top five scorers for the Phoenix, finishing the 10K course in a time of 37:45.
Other finishers for the Phoenix included seniors William Lobner (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Andrew Dockendorff (La Crescent, Minn.) who completed their careers with times of 37:52 and 38:16 respectively.
Host Wisconsin won the men's team competition scoring 43 points while Big Ten foe Michigan finished second with 73.
