GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - For the 26th consecutive season, the
No. RV/25 Green Bay women's basketball team tips off its regular season play
with a road trip, compiling a 15-10 during the span. The Phoenix travels to
Northern Iowa Saturday, Nov. 10 where it will battle the Panthers at 2:30 p.m.
at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Saturday's contest will be the fourth
meeting in five seasons between the two teams as Green Bay looks to extend its
four-game winning streak against the 2011-12 Women's Basketball Invitational
runner-up. Both teams appeared in the same region during the 2010-11 NCAA
Tournament. UNI lost to Michigan State in the first round while Green Bay edged
the Spartans to advance to the program's first Sweet 16 appearance.
BORSETH IS BACK: Saturday officially tips off the second Kevin Borseth era leading the
Phoenix. For the first time in program history, on April 5, Green Bay announced
the hiring of a coach from the Big Ten Conference, or any BCS school for that
matter when Borseth was introduced as the fourth coach in Green Bay's storied
history. Borseth spent his previous five seasons as the head coach at Michigan,
compiling an overall record of 87-73.
Prior to Michigan, in 1998 Borseth
was hired as the second head coach at Green Bay where he led the Phoenix to an
impressive 216-62 record while advancing to the postseason all nine seasons.
Under Borseth's leadership, Green Bay is 4-5 in regular season openers.
FABULOUS FRESHMEN: Green Bay's freshman class consists of seven players with five true
freshmen and two redshirt freshmen. The class size marks the third time in
program history the Phoenix has entered the season with seven freshmen on its
roster with the others being the 1985-86 and 2007-08 seasons.
Throughout exhibition play, the
freshman class combined for a total of over 130 minutes in exhibition play with
Kaili Lukan (Barrie, Ontario) proving she can contribute for the Phoenix
immediately, registering a combined seven steals and 18 points in 32 minutes of
play during Green Bay's two exhibition games.
STEADY STARTERS: The Phoenix returns four of its five starters this season. Adrian Ritchie
(12.3 ppg.), Lydia Bauer (11.1 ppg.), Sarah Eichler (9.9 rpg.) and Megan Lukan
(6.6) all started for the Phoenix in 2011-12 while senior Stephanie Sension
(Hopkins, Minn.) led all bench players averaging 6.0 points per game, 2.3
rebounds per game and 12.0 minutes per contest.
PRESEASON CONFERENCE HONORS: Green Bay tips off its 2012-13 season picked to finish first
in the Horizon League while UNI was picked to finish fourth in the Missouri
Valley Conference. Green Bay senior
Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) is a Preseason Horizon League First Team
selection while classmate Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) was a Preseason
Second Team pick. UNI senior guard Jacqui Kalin was a preseason All-MVC
selection.
LAST MEETING (DEC. 4, 2011): In last season's meeting, Bauer scored 19 points in the 75-67
win while sophomore Megan Lukan (Barrie, Ontario) added 13 points. UNI opened
the game with a 13-0 run, holding the Phoenix scoreless until the 15:05 mark.
Green Bay battled back in the second half, building its lead to as many as 16,
capturing the eventual win.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS: With 1,419 career points at UNI, Kalin is on track to become
the all-time leading scorer in Panthers' history. Kalin is also one of 30
candidates for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award. Kalin returns to the court this
season for UNI after missing the entire 2011-12 season due to injury.
Last season UNI made history by
notching the program's first postseason wins during the Women's Basketball
Invitational, winning three games to advance to the finals.
