CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Led by strong play and top-five finishes from its seniors, the Green Bay men's golf team claimed the championship at the CSU Cougar Classic on Tuesday. Seniors Chad Ebert (Heartland, Wis.) and Cam Fuller (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) finished in third and fourth, respectively to lead the Phoenix to the title.
Green Bay trailed Valparaiso by four shots entering the second round but made up the ground on Tuesday by tying for the best round of the day. The Phoenix finished with a two-day score of 590, defeating Indian Hills by four strokes and Valpo by five strokes.
Ebert finished the tournament in third place with a two-day score of 146 (70-76) while Fuller was a stroke back in a tie for fourth place (71-76). Ebert had 22 pars for the tournament while Fuller finished with seven birdies - tied for the fourth most in the field.
While the seniors were leading the Phoenix over the course of the two-day event, a sophomore and a freshman shot a pair of 74s on Tuesday to help Green Bay win the title. Sophomore Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) and freshman Gene Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) both carded 2-over par 74s on Tuesday to pace the Phoenix. The pair finished in a tie for eighth and a tie for 19th, respectively.
Junior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) had the team's third best score on the team in Monday's opening round and finished in a tie for 13th after rounds of 74 and 76.
