WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Senior Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) led the Phoenix men's tennis team by grabbing the Singles A consoluation title at the 2012 Purdue Fall Inivitational. The competition was the second of three meets Green Bay will compete in this Fall.

Finkenbrink was sent to the consolation bracket after dropping his first match 3-6, 1-6 to Ross Vanderploeg of Western Michigan. But with a combined set score of 36-15 over his next three matches, Finkenbrink easily advanced to the consulation title match. There he faced Dominic Patrick of Iowa, who proved to be a little more of a challenge. Finkenbrink cruised to a 6-0 first set win, but fell in set two, 3-6. In a first-to-ten-game tiebreaker set, he outlasted Patrick 10-6 to take the consulation title.

Freshman Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) came away with the Singles B consulation title after a comeback win in the first consulation round. After dropping the first set 3-6, Leto recovered to win the next two sets 6-1, 10-6. He faced little competition over his next two matches en route to winning the Singles B consulation title game, 6-4, 6-4.

Sophomore Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singles A bracket before being eliminated by eventual Singles A champion Mark Kovacs of Purdue. Tenzer breezed through his first three rounds before battling Kovacs in a close match. Kovacs came away with the slim 7-6(6), 6-4 win to advance to the semifinals.

The doubles team of sophomores Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) and Gary Notkin (Plymouth, Minn.) won the opening match of the Doubles B bracket 8-2, and followed it up with an 8-1 win in round two to advance to the bracket's championship game, where the Minnesotan duo was defeated 8-5.

Green Bay will have nearly a month off before competing at the ITA Regionals hosted by Michigan State Oct. 18-22. The Phoenix will then look to defend its 2012 Horizon League title in the Spring portion of the season.
