GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After a short stay on its home field,
the Green Bay (2-4-1, 0-1 HL) men's soccer team will travel west to face Oregon
State (3-2-1) and Gonzaga (2-3-0) in the Oregon State Tournament being held Sept.
21-23. It will be the second regular season tournament of the season for the
Phoenix who is playing six of its eight games in the month of September away
from home.
Green Bay travels to Oregon after
suffering two losses in five days. The Phoenix fell 2-1 in its Horizon League
opener at Detroit Sept. 14 before being shut out 3-0 in a "flat" performance
against SIUE on its home field Sept. 18. On the bright side, the Phoenix
recently saw the return of senior goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) who had
been rehabbing an injury suffered Aug. 31.
"I'm not as sharp as I want to be but
that comes with not competing for a while," said Wehking. "I was supposed to be
out four to six weeks but our trainer Emily Johnson did a phenomenal job
getting me back earlier than expected. I'm just taking it one day at a time."
After missing the contest against
SIUE, Green Bay's goal leader, Kirby Allen (Appleton, Wis.), hopes to return to
the playing field against Oregon State. Allen leads the Phoenix with three
goals, one assist and seven points. Junior Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and
senior Alonso Flores (Chicago, Ill.) have each scored one goal this season
while Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Wis.) leads the team with 15 shots.
SCOUTING OREGON STATE... Oregon State enters its tournament coming off a 3-0 shutout
win over Gonzaga Sept. 15. The Beavers are being led in scoring by Khiry
Shelton with three goals, one assist and seven points while Emery Welshman
leads the way with a team high 12 shots.
OSU hails from the PAC12 Conference
and through games played Sept. 16 the Beavers rank fourth in the country with
20 assists, 10th in scoring offense (2.83) and 13th in total goals (17.0).
Senior midfielder Roberto Farfan ranks eighth in the country with four assists
per game.
Friday's contest will be the second
meeting between Green Bay and Oregon State as the Phoenix will look to even the
series after being edged 2-1 last season at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
SCOUTING GONZAGA... The Bulldogs make their second trip in one week to Lorenz Field to face
the Phoenix Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. CT. Gonzaga enters the tournament with two
consecutive 3-0 shutout losses. In addition to falling 3-0 against Oregon State
Sept. 15, the Bulldogs were shut out by No. 4 ranked Santa Barbara Sept. 2 at
home.
Three players have each scored two
goals for Gonzaga including Clark Phillips, Lars Ludwigs and Conner Bevans.
The Sept. 23 contest featuring Green
Bay and Gonzaga will be the first meeting in program history between the two
teams.
