Green Bay Heads to Davidson for Final Preseason Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. ( - The Green Bay volleyball team (4-5) will face a trio of opponents from the state of North Carolina this weekend, traveling to Davidson, N.C., for the Davidson Wildcat Classic at Belk Arena. The Phoenix opens the tournament against NC Central on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT, then takes on High Point (9 a.m.) and the host Wildcats (4 p.m.) on Saturday. It will mark the team's fourth and final preseason tournament before opening Horizon League play next weekend.

Fans can follow the Wildcat Classic with live stats and live video links on Live stats will be available for all six matches, while pay-per-view video will be available for Davidson's contests. The matches against NC Central, High Point and Davidson will mark Green Bay's first-ever meetings with all three schools.

NC Central enters the Wildcat Classic with a 2-11 record and most recently went 1-3 at the Kennesaw State Owls Classic last weekend. The Eagles' lone win in the tournament was a 3-0 sweep of Tennessee State on Saturday. NCCU is led by freshman Christine Anthony, who has a team-high 154 kills while hitting .213, as well as a team-best 83 digs.

High Point boasts an 8-4 overall record and is coming off a 3-1 road win at Elon on Tuesday. The Panthers went 2-1 last weekend at their home tournament, starting the HPU Classic with a 3-2 win over George Mason, dropping its second match to Loyola Marymount 1-3, and finishing strong with a 3-1 win over Virginia Tech. Annemarie Chin earned HPU Classic MVP honors after coming up with a career-high 23 digs against the Hokies, while Chelsea Davis was also named to the all-tournament team. Senior Courtney Johnk leads the Panthers with 160 kills (3.2 per set) on the year, hitting .253.

Davidson enters its home tournament with a 3-4 record, coming off a tough weekend at the North Florida Invitational. The Wildcats dropped all three of its matches in five sets, falling to Presbyterian, Florida A&M and North Florida. Senior libero Molly Crenshaw recorded 36 digs in the tournament finale, helping her earn all-tournament honors. Junior Caroline Brown is tops on the team in kills for the 2012 season with 110, averaging 3.44 per set.

Green Bay went 1-1 last weekend at the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Invitational in Brookings, S.D., playing in a pair of exciting five-set matches. The Phoenix dropped a heartbreaker to SDSU on Friday after jumping out to a 2-0 lead, and then bounced back to defeat Bradley on Saturday after trailing 2-0. Junior Monica Anderson (Cottage Grove, Wis.) paced the Phoenix with 36 kills in the two matches, including a career-high 20 in the comeback win over the Braves. Anderson earned all-tournament honors along with teammate Leah Poel (Jenison, Mich.), who posted a pair of double-doubles while recording 98 assists, 28 digs and 14 kills on the weekend.

Before getting on the plane to North Carolina, Phoenix head coach Debbie Kirch joined host Ryan Hartwig in studio to recap the Jackrabbit Invitational and preview this weekend's Davidson Wildcat Classic.

The Wildcat Classic marks the end of Green Bay's month-long, nine-match road stretch. The Phoenix returns home next weekend to open Horizon League play against Cleveland State (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Youngstown State (Saturday, 4 p.m.) at the Kress Center. They will be Green Bay's first home matches since hosting the Country Inn & Suites Tournament on Aug. 24-25.
