GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Getting goals
from three different players, the Green Bay women's soccer team completed a
weekend home sweep with a 3-1 win over visiting South Dakota (1-5-0) at Aldo
Santaga Stadium. The Phoenix (3-4-0) has now won three of its last four games
and improves to 2-1-0 at home this season.
"I'm happy with the result and winning three out of
the last four," said head coach Trevor Warren. "We still have things to improve
on, but that was the goal that I set last weekend. Let's win these two at home
and that will be three of our last four. We accomplished that, and we will look
forward to Illinois State."
After scoring the first four goals in Friday
night's 4-2 win over Michigan Tech, Green Bay got off to a slow start on
Sunday and fell behind when South Dakota's Jenny Teslow scored in the 11th
minute.
Sophomore Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.) scored the equalizer in the 22nd minute, a beautiful
shot past the keeper to the far post from 15 yards out. Senior Megan Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.) assisted
on Friedl's goal, which was Friedl's first of the season and jumpstarted the
Phoenix win.
"It is really nice to play at home and have the
advantages of that and get to wins under our belt," said Friedl. "We have had
some disappointing losses when we knew we were the better team, so it is good
to get wins."
The two teams played the next 45-plus minutes knotted
at 1-1 before the Phoenix was able to pull ahead in the 68th minute. Junior Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) sent
a cross into the box, and sophomore Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) was able to find the back of the net with a leaping
header past Coyote keeper Abby Lindsey.
The Phoenix scored an insurance goal with just under
10 minutes to play thanks to some impressive dribbling from Friedl and the
first career goal from freshman Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.). Friedl beat two defenders to create a 2-on-1 with
the keeper. Friedl's slid a pass to Hartmann, who scored from in close for an 81st
minute goal.
"I felt like our crosses and our corners were poor and
with the possession we had we didn't do enough with it," said Warren. "It is interesting
that out of the maybe 10 crosses we had, we had two good ones and we scored on
both of them. We just have to be better at delivering the ball."
Sophomore keeper Katy Pilarzyk (Madison, Wis.) made four saves in the win for the Phoenix, who
outshot South Dakota 10-7 in the contest.
After playing four games in the past 10 games, Green
Bay will take 10 days off before returning to action on Sept. 19 at Illinois
State. The Phoenix will next be in action at home on Sept. 22, kicking off
Horizon League play against Detroit at 12 p.m.
