GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (2-2-0) men's soccer team heads to Dayton, Ohio for the
Dayton Marriott Classic Sept. 7-9 at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio. The Phoenix
will face the host Flyers (3-1-0) Friday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m. CT before
closing its tournament play Sunday, Sept. 9 against Missouri State (3-0-1) at
10:00 a.m.
Both Green Bay and Dayton enter the Marriott Classic after
suffering a road loss Sept. 2. Missouri State heads to Dayton with a three-game
shutout winning streak. Eastern Illinois (1-3-0) will be the other team
competing in the tournament.
Green Bay's trip to Dayton marks the midpoint of its longest
road swing of the season. The Phoenix kicked off its four-game stretch Sept. 2
at Niagara, where it fell 3-1 to the Purple Eagles. The Dayton Tournament will
also be Green Bay's final tune-up before battling its first Horizon League opponent
of the season at Detroit (1-3-0) Friday, Sept. 14.
Sophomore Kirby Allen (Appleton, Wis.) is off to a great
start this season, leading the Phoenix with three goals and one assist. Senior
Whitney Browne (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), who faces his former team in Dayton,
leads the Phoenix with 13 shots in the young season.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Max Nimmo (Janesville, Wis.) will
defend the net for Green Bay as senior captain Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.)
continues to rehab an ankle injury suffered Aug. 31 against Northern Illinois. Nimmo
has registered six saves for the Phoenix throughout 138 minutes of play, while
picking up his first collegiate win against NIU.
SCOUTING DAYTON: Dayton is off to a 3-1 start this
season for the first time since 2003. The Flyers most recent win was a 3-2
victory over then-ranked No. 22 Furman University Aug. 31 in the Nike/Aaron
Olitsky Memorial Classic. As a result, Dayton is currently ranked 35th in this
week's NSCAA poll and 33rd in the College Soccer News poll.
Dayton, who hails from the Atlantic 10 Conference, is being
led by senior midfielder Daniel Berko who has scored three goals on the season
while midfielder Eddie Jones leads the Flyers with a team-high four assists and
eight shots.
SCOUTING MISSOURI
STATE: The Bears
enter the Dayton Tournament with three consecutive shutout victories for
Missouri State's defense and sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Riggs. The Bears'
defense has limited its past two opponents to a combined eight shots and one
shot on goal in the University of Central Arkansas Tournament. Sophomore
defender James Fawke was named Tournament Defensive MVP while midfielder Jack
Roberts and defender Andrew Turner were All-Tournament Team selections.
The Dayton Tournament will be the second consecutive
tournament for Missouri State who hails from the Missouri Valley Conference. Jared
Gain leads the Bears with two assists and one goal while junior forward Cole
Alexander has fired a team-high 10 shots, five on goal.
