GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay men's soccer senior
goalkeeper Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) was named the Horizon League Defensive
Player of the Week, announced by the League office Monday. The accolade marks
the first Horizon League weekly award for Wehking during his collegiate career
with the Phoenix.
"It's great for us to get recognized
and receive honors for our performances, Ryan had a great weekend for us," said
head coach Dan Popik. "He's our leader and our captain and did a great job this
weekend making saves that he should have made and also did a great job
communicating with the back four to keep them organized."
In addition to naming an Offensive
Player of the Week, this season the Horizon League added the Defensive Player
of the Week award. Wehking is the fourth goalkeeper in the history of the Green
Bay men's soccer program to receive Player of the Week honors.
Wehking receives the award after
helping Green Bay kick off its 2012 season with a 1-0 shutout win over Northern
Kentucky Friday at Aldo Santaga Stadium. The shutout also marked the 20th of
Wehking's career, setting a Green Bay individual career program record. Wehking
recorded two saves in the contest against Northern Kentucky and registered
seven saves against Marquette on Sunday.
The Phoenix wraps up its opening
three-game homestand Friday, Aug. 31 when it hosts Northern Illinois (0-1-0) at
6:00 p.m. at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
