FORT MYERS, Fla.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
women's soccer team scored first Friday night in its opening game of the
Embassy Suites Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., but tournament host Florida Gulf Coast
(2-1) scored twice within four minutes to steal a 2-1 victory. Senior Megan Braatz (Waukesha, Wis.) found the
back of the net for the Phoenix in the 62nd minute.
With Tropical Storm Isaac heading towards the gulf
coast, Green Bay's game against Florida Atlantic scheduled for Sunday morning
has been moved up to 6 p.m. on Saturday night.
Braatz was aggressive from the onset on Friday night,
firing three shots in the opening 16 minutes. With the shots even at 5-5 at the
break, the Phoenix and the Eagles went to the halftime break scoreless.
Seventeen minutes into the second half, Braatz put the
visitors in front, scoring off a pass from sophomore Hannah Kernen
(Belleville, Wis.).
The Phoenix had two good chances just eight minutes
later, but FGCU's Brittany Brown turned away shots from sophomore Emily Friedl (Kenosha, Wis.) and
Kernan.
The Eagles pushed across the equalizer in the 79th
minute on a header goal from Emma Blackwell. Less than three minutes later,
Blackwell added the game-winner and the Phoenix suffered a second-straight
tough defeat. Green Bay dropped its opener 2-0 last Friday when South Dakota
State scored twice in the last 10 minutes.
"It was tough to lose a second game in a row in the
final minutes," said Warren. "We had two really good chances to go 2-0 up right
before they counter attacked and scored the tying goal following our corner
kick. The heat and humidity took its toll in the later stages of the game but our
players fought bravely. We will have to bounce back with a quick turnaround
before facing Florida Atlantic Saturday night."
