GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green
Bay senior libero Brittany Groth
(Oak Creek, Wis.) has been selected as one of the seven members of the
Preseason All-Horizon League Volleyball Team, the conference office announced
Friday. The team was voted on by the league's coaches, who were not allowed to
vote for players on their own team.
Groth is coming off a junior campaign that was one of
the best in school history. She averaged a school-record 5.78 digs per set, a
figure that ranked ninth among all NCAA Division I players.
"Brittany proved last year that she was not only one
of the best defensive players in the league, but also in the country," Phoenix
head coach Debbie Kirch said. "We
didn't recruit her as a libero, but it is a position she has really grown into
and I expect her to continue to develop in that role this season by having a
more consistent serve and leading our strong defensive core."
The 2011 All-Horizon League performer shattered Green
Bay's single season record for digs last year with 659, a total that ranked
second in the conference only to 2012 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
Taylor Root of Valpo. A two-time conference player of the week, Groth recorded
her 1000th career dig in 2011 and also broke the school record for digs in a
four-set match (38).
Groth and her teammates will play in Green Bay's annual
intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Kress Center before kicking
off the regular season next weekend with the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites
Tournament. Saturday's scrimmage is free and open to the public.
