Phoenix Falls in Doubleheader at North Dakota

GRAND FOLKS N.D. ( - The Green Bay (13-16) softball team continued its four-game nonconference stint with a stop at North Dakota (17-24) at Apollo Field Thursday, April 12. The Phoenix took an early lead in both games but fell short, losing the double header against the Fighting Sioux.

GAME 1 - Green Bay 4, North Dakota 7 - The Phoenix jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) hit a double to center field, scoring Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) on a fielding error. Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) followed up with a single to center field then advanced to second while Butts scored the unearned run for the 2-0 advantage.

North Dakota cut the Phoenix lead in half in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single up the middle, making it 2-1. The Fighting Sioux took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third following a two-run homer with one out.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Green Bay regained the lead when Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) grounded out to second base, advancing Peerenboom to third and scoring Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) to knot the game 3-3. Stacey Butts followed Rivera with an RBI single to center field, scoring Peerenboom for the 4-3 advantage.

The Fighting Sioux tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth with one out with an RBI single to left field. North Dakota posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off an RBI single and a Phoenix error, claiming the 7-4 win.

Green Bay finished the game with four runs on seven hits and one error while the Fighting Sioux scored seven runs on 14 hits and one error.

Both Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) and Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) pitched three innings for Green Bay.

GAME 2 - Green Bay 8, North Dakota 10 - In the final game of its double header, Green Bay once again scored in the first inning of play. Reinke led off the game with a double to right center field before Rivera reached base on an error, scoring Reinke for the early 1-0 lead.

North Dakota hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to take the 2-1 lead.

The Phoenix answered in the top of the third with two outs when Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) hit a two-run RBI double down the left field line scoring her sister Stacey and Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.), regaining the 3-2 advantage. The Fighting Sioux tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the inning with two outs, scoring on a fielder's choice.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Green Bay took the 4-3 lead when Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) earned a walk, scoring Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.). North Dakota scored six runs on six hits, including a three-run homer to boost its lead to 9-4.

Green Bay rallied in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run homer from Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) scoring Newtols and Stacey Butts. Omahen's second homer of the season cut the Fighting Sioux lead to two (10-8) but it wasn't enough as Green Bay suffered its second consecutive loss.

Both Omahen and Shannon Butts had three RBIs to lead the Phoenix in the contest. As a team, Green Bay finished the game with eight runs on 10 hits and seven RBIs.

Green Bay returns to Horizon League play Saturday, April 14 as it hosts Butler in a double header in its home opener at Ben Garot Field at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. The Phoenix will wrap up the three-game series with the Bulldogs Sunday, April 15 at 12:00 p.m.
