GREEN BAY,
Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay women's tennis team (1-8, 0-1 Horizon League) dropped a 7-0 decision
to Northern Iowa (8-4) Saturday afternoon at Western Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Panthers swept the doubles point before winning each of the six singles
contests in straight sets.
"Northern Iowa was a very tough matchup," Phoenix head
coach Sara Schubring said. "They are
a very deep team that is solid from one through six. However our team learned a
lot today and we are continuing to get better as the season progresses."
After dropping the first set 6-1 to UNI's Chelsea
Moore at the No. 4 singles spot, Phoenix junior Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) battled in set number two before
dropping a close 7-5 decision. Freshman Samantha Iwen (De Pere, Wis.) also put forth a strong effort at the No. 6 spot,
battling to a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Panthers' junior Stefannia
Sampaio.
The Panthers also proved to be too strong at the top
singles and doubles spots. The UNI duo of Cassandra Dix and Krissy Lankelma
cruised past Jennifer Bradfield
(Fairfield, Iowa) and Morgan Weuve
(Green Bay, Wis.) at the No. 1 doubles spot 8-0. Dix and Weuve then faced off
in a long singles bout at No. 2, with the Panther freshman prevailing 6-2, 6-1.
Bradfield fell at No. 1 singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-0 result to UNI's Nina Phahler.
The Phoenix has a long break before its next match,
taking four weeks off from competition before hosting Horizon League opponents
UIC and Valparaiso on March 31 and April 1 at Western Racquet and Fitness.
