BROWN DEER, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued to perform well at the 2012 Horizon League Championships on Friday, combining to win three individual conference titles, break four school records and a conference record at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center. The Phoenix women ended the day in third place, while the men's squad is in fifth with one day remaining.
The Green Bay women placed four swimmers in the top five of the 400-yard IM Friday night, led by an individual conference title from senior Amber Bartholomew (Alexandria, Minn.). Bartholomew cruised to a first-place time of 4:18.62, breaking her own school record of 4:23.84 (2011) and the Horizon League record of 4:19.57 (Joanna Olsson, Cleveland State 2011). In addition, the senior also achieved an NCAA B cut.
Also earning trips to the podium in the 400 IM were Megan Burley (Hazelhurst, Wis.), Melissa Killpatrick (Elk River, Minn.) and Lauren Caruso (DeForest, Wis.), who placed third (4:28.31), fourth (4:29.23) and fifth (4:30.11), respectively.
Amanda Walker (Sun Prairie, Wis.) continued her outstanding freshman campaign on Friday by placing third in the 200 freestyle. The rookie touched in at 1:50.53, breaking the Green Bay school record of 1:51.47 that was set by former Phoenix standout Shannon Demrow in 2009.
Walker then swam the opening leg of Green Bay's second-place 800 free relay in the final women's race of the evening. The team of Walker, Kendra Rottier (Green Bay, Wis.), Heather Bodin (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) set a new school record with a time of 7:27.18 in the runner-up effort, and would have snapped the conference record if not for the winning Cleveland State relay, which touched in at 7:26.29.
On the men's side, senior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.) went out with a bang in his final Horizon League Championship event, winning the 1-meter board while shattering his own school record. The 16-time conference diver of the week put up a gigantic total of 379.15, breaking his previous mark of 366.15. Pogue now holds both Green Bay diving records after achieving the 3-meter standard on Wednesday night (352.20).
Junior Mitchell Spaeth (Fredonia, Wis.) also had an excellent showing on the low board, finishing third with a score of 328.65 - his personal best.
The top men's performance in the pool on Friday came from junior Jonathan Lesniak (McHenry, Ill.), who sprinted to a conference championship in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.24. Freshman Ryan Korslin (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) was close behind, finishing third in 55.80.
