FORT WAYNE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's
tennis team (0-7, 0-1 Horizon League) dropped a close, 4-3 decision to IPFW on
Saturday night at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The
Phoenix was able to win three of the six singles contests, but the Mastodons
swept the three doubles matches for the deciding doubles point.
Senior
Morgan Weuve (Green Bay, Wis.) and
junior Maria Anderson (Marshfield,
Wis.) both picked up hard-fought, three-set wins in singles action on Saturday.
After dropping the first set 6-2 to IPFW's Raquel Vescovi, Weuve rallied back
to take sets two and three at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 6-4. Anderson split the first
two sets against Caterina Kiefer at No. 4 (6-4, 3-6) before winning the third
and final set 10-3.
"Anderson
had a great weekend for us, finishing 3-1," Phoenix head coach Sara Schubring said. "She showed great
court coverage and solid serving in the tie-breaker. Weuve also rebounded
nicely from a first set loss, taking control with punishing baseline play."
At
No. 5 singles, Rebecca Nelson
(Brookfield, Wis.) was ahead 5-1 in the first set when IPFW's Alex Forsyth was
forced to forfeit due to injury.
Green
Bay will play one more road contest on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Bradley before
beginning a three-match homestand on March 3 against Northern Iowa at Western
Racquet and Fitness Club.
