ISHPEMING,
Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams competed
in the freestyle races Friday on the first day of the NCAA Central Region
Skiing Championships in Ishpeming, Mich. The Phoenix men are in fifth place at
the meet's halfway point, while the women's squad sits in seventh.
Pacing the Green Bay men on
Friday was freshman Matt Nichols
(Wausau, Wis.), who finished 21st in the 10K freestyle race with a time of
26:57.30. Senior Matt Nistler
(Bemidji, Minn.) and sophomore Eddie
Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) were next two Phoenix skiers across the line, as
Nistler finished 30th in 27:33.30 and Gurney was one spot back in 27:39.20.
Freshman Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) was
the first Phoenix skier to finish the women's 5K freestyle event on Friday.
Guthrie placed 25th in 16:41.50, while fellow freshman Kaila Carpenter (Duluth, Minn.) also earned a sub-17 minute finish
in 16:54.20 - good for 31st.
The Green Bay skiers return
to the course tomorrow for the final NCAA qualifier of the season. The men's
15K classic kicks off first at 9 a.m. Central time, before the women wrap things
up with a 10K classic at 11:30 a.m.
