GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
women's soccer program will have several new faces on its 2012 roster, as 10
incoming freshmen are set to join the Phoenix in the fall, head coach Trevor Warren announced on Wednesday.
The newcomers prepared to play for the Phoenix next
season are Nastacia Behle (St. Paul,
Mo.), Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.), Annie Flanagan (Racine, Wis.), Sandra Graybill (Lakeville, Minn.), Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.), Asia Laudal (Eau Claire, Wis.), Maria Lillge (Appleton, Wis.), Justy Linton (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Christina Mauthe (Appleton, Wis.) and Devan Schultz (Fish Creek, Wis.). The
10-member class represents the second-largest recruiting class under Warren,
who added 11 players last season.
"The players in the 2012
class possess a great mixture of experience and talent to add to our young squad,"
Warren said. "We certainly have added some size, speed and steel to the team.
The players have represented everything from Elite Clubs National League (ECNL)
teams, Midwest Regional League (MRL) teams, Olympic Development Programs (ODP)
and high school state championship teams, as well as the prestigious Shattuck
St. Mary's Soccer Academy."
Nastacia "Stos" Behle
Position: Goalkeeper • Hometown: St. Paul, Mo. • High
School: Shattuck-St. Mary's • Club Team: Shattuck-St. Mary's
The 5-foot-10 Behle was a
goalkeeper for both the Missouri (2006-08) and Minnesota (2009-10) Olympic
Development Programs. She was selected as the Shattuck-St. Mary's team MVP in
2010 and was also a member of the winning squad at the 2008 Futsal National
Championships (indoor five-a-side soccer).
Warren on
Behle: "Stos is a
big, imposing keeper who commands the penalty area. She's not the kind of
keeper forwards will want to go one-on-one with. She's excellent in the air,
she's a great shot-stopper, plus she has a very long kicking game."
Sydney Born
Position: Defender/Midfielder • Hometown: Edina, Minn.
• High School: Edina • Club Team: Minnesota Thunder Academy ECNL Team
Born was chosen as her
team's captain and MVP at Edina High School in 2011. She was a two-time
all-conference selection, as well as an all-state pick as a senior. Born was
also a member of the Minnesota Olympic Development Program and ODP Region II
Camp in 2010 and 2011.
Warren on
Born: "Sydney has
a great deal of experience from playing at the elite club level in the ECNL for
the Minnesota Thunder, as well as from being a starter for the Minnesota ODP
team. She is a quick, aggressive defender who is excellent in one-against-one
situations. She is usually designated in her club and high school games to mark
the opposing teams' most dangerous striker."
Annie Flanagan
Position: Midfielder/Defender • Hometown: Racine, Wis.
• High School: J.I. Case • Club Team: Kenosha United FC
Flanagan was an honorable
mention all-conference pick at Case High School and was chosen as her team's
defensive player of the year. She helped Case to regional championships in
three consecutive seasons (2009, 2010, 2011), as well as a sectional title in
2011. Flanagan also aided Kenosha United FC to a second-place finish in the
State Cup in 2010.
Warren on
Flanagan: "Annie is a strong,
competitive central midfielder who possesses a wide range of skills and will
add a physical presence to that part of the field. She is a versatile player
who does as well on defense as she does on offense. That versatility will make
her an invaluable member of the team. I believe she is one of those players
that will thrive in the college environment."
Sandra Graybill
Position: Defender • Hometown: Lakeville, Minn. • High
School: Shattuck-St. Mary's • Club Team: Shattuck-St. Mary's
Graybill was a member of
the Minnesota Olympic Development Program squad in 2008 and 2009, as well as a
defensive standout on the Shattuck-St. Mary's U18 club team.
Warren on
Graybill: "Sandra is
another member of the Soccer Center of Excellence at Shattuck-St. Mary's to
join the Green Bay program. She is one of those fullbacks that has the pace and
tough tackling ability that will make life difficult for any opposing winger.
She is also a great asset on offense, especially with the ability to get into
the attack and deliver crosses into the danger areas."
Heidi Hartmann
Position: Forward • Hometown: Plymouth, Minn. • High
School: Osseo Senior High • Club Team: Dakota Rev Fury
Hartmann, a three-time
all-conference selection at Osseo Senior High School, was an honorable mention
all-state pick in her senior season. She was selected as her team's captain and
MVP in her final year, and was also the winner of the Best Defensive Player and
Hustle awards. In addition to playing soccer, Hartmann was a letter winner in
both basketball and track.
Warren on
Hartmann: "Heidi is
simply one of those forwards that defenders hate to mark. At 5-foot-9, she is a
fast, powerful and physical forward with the ability to get behind defenders
and take them on one-versus-one. Any 50-50 balls will automatically be in
Heidi's favor - nothing will stop her from getting to the ball first."
Asia Laudal
Position: Forward/Midfielder • Hometown: Eau Claire,
Wis. • High School: Eau Claire Memorial • Club Team: Eau Claire United
Laudal began playing
varsity soccer at Eau Claire Memorial High School as a freshman and as a senior
was named Most Outstanding Player, as well as team captain. Her Eau Claire
United club team posted an undefeated record while placing first at the USA Cup
in Blaine, Minn.
Warren on
Laudal: "Asia is
another incoming freshman that will bring a physical presence to wherever she
is on the field. She is another competitive, versatile player, tough in the
tackle and with a strong shot. She has attended the Green Bay soccer camps for
the last three years and it will be fun to coach her for the next four years."
Maria Lillge
Position: Forward/Midfield • Hometown: Appleton, Wis.
• High School: Appleton North • Club Team: Appleton Soccer Club
Lillge's Appleton North
squad posted an undefeated record en route to a state championship 2011. Lillge
also aided Appleton Soccer Club to state titles in 2008 and 2012. A varsity
starter since her rookie season, she picked up all-conference awards in both
her freshman and junior years. Lillge is a high school teammate of future
Phoenix player Christina Mauthe.
Warren on
Lillge: "Maria was
a major part of Appleton North's state championship team in 2011. She can play
either in an attacking midfielder role or as a striker. Yet again, Maria is
another physical player who relishes that side of the game. She is a player
that will be competitive and excel in the college environment."
Justy Linton
Position: Defense/Midfield • Hometown: Winnipeg,
Manitoba • High School: Shattuck St.-Mary's • Club Team: Shattuck St. Mary's
Another standout from
Shattuck St.-Mary's, Linton received the team's Coaches Choice Award in both
2010 and 2011. She was a member of the U16 BMO Canadian All-Stars, as well as
the U14 Manitoba Provincial Team. Linton was a Canadian Regional and National
Training Center participant, and was named the Focus 9 Elite Most-Improved
Player in 2008.
Warren on
Linton: "Justy is a
5-foot-10 center back and captain of the Manitoba Provincial team who will
bring an instant presence to the heart of our defense. She has the ability to
run down attackers but is also very adept at bringing the ball out from
defense."
Christina Mauthe
Position: Forward • Hometown: Appleton, Wis. • High
School: Appleton North • Club Team: New United 94
Mauthe was a member of
Appleton North's undefeated state championship squad in 2011 along with future
Phoenix teammate Maria Lillge. She earned all-conference honors in both 2009
and 2010, and was a member of the Wisconsin State ODP team under Green Bay head
coach Trevor Warren.
Warren on
Mauthe: "Mauthe is
a striker who simply possesses the natural ability to put the ball in the net.
She was another member of Appleton North's team that won the state title in
2011, but unfortunately missed most of the season due to injury. I fully expect
her and teammate Maria Lillge to lead Appleton North to another run at the
title. She is a very technically sound forward with a great sense for where the
goal is."
Devan Schultz
Position: Defense/Midfield • Hometown: Fish Creek,
Wis. • High School: Gibraltar • Club Team: Appleton Soccer Club-FC Green Bay
Schultz has been
Gibraltar's leading scorer in each of the last three seasons, earning team MVP
and First Team All-Packerland Conference honors twice. As a freshman in 2009,
Schultz was involved in 27 of her team's 33 goals, finding the net 14 times
while dishing out 13 assists. Her Appleton Soccer Club-FC Green Bay combined squad won the U18 Wisconsin
State Cup in 2012, and she has a total of eight years in the Wisconsin ODP.
Warren on
Schultz: "Devan is a
local player that can play any position, but mainly plays on the left side
because she is a natural left-footer. She has excellent passing ability,
particularly when hitting the ball over distance. She will be one of the best
players on the squad at putting spin and curve into her passes."
The 10 newcomers will help
fill the void of Green Bay's two seniors lost to graduation following the 2011
campaign - midfielder Corey Arno
(Winneconne, Wis.) and goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.). The two combined to play 131 of a possible 132
games over the past four seasons, accumulating nearly 12,000 minutes of playing
time.
