UW-Green Bay Well Represented on Academic All-League Teams

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - With the 2011 semester in the books, the Horizon League recently honored student-athletes for their success both in competition and in the classroom, announcing its 2011 Fall Academic All-League Teams. Five fall sports were honored, featuring four student-athletes from UW-Green Bay.

UW-Green Bay women's soccer goalie Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) is Green Bay's all-time saves leader with 357 career saves and makes her first appearance on the Academic All-League team. The senior education major has a 3.80 GPA, started all 18 games for the Phoenix this season and finished with a save percentage of .850. Throughout her career, Drusch has also earned Horizon League Academic Honor Roll and Scholar-Athlete of the Month honors.

Three volleyball players landed spots on the Academic All-League team including seniors Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) and Carlie Willison (Greenfield, Wis.) and sophomore Leah Van Zeeland (Kaukauna, Wis.).

Gitter, a human development major, recently completed her career after leading the Phoenix in kills each of the past three seasons. The right side hitter started 113 sets in 2011 and had a team-high 320 kills while adding 62 blocks. At the conclusion of the season, she was named All-Horizon League for her play. A previous Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll selection, Gitter has a 3.479 GPA.

Willison also completed her eligibility with the Phoenix this fall. The business and human development major with a 3.570 GPA started 101 sets in her final season with the program, ranking third on the team in kills with 201 and totaling 179 digs.

A sophomore right side and outside hitter for the Phoenix, Van Zeeland is an education major with an impressive 3.895 GPA. Despite starting just 78 sets due to injuries, Van Zeeland still finished her sophomore campaign with 166 kills and 175 digs.

....
