COLERAINE, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams wrapped up the two-day St. Scholastica Hilltop Invitational on Sunday, competing in the freestyle and classic races over the weekend at Mt. Itasca.
The men's squad finished the season's second NCAA qualifying event with a sixth-place finish out of seven schools, while the women's team placed seventh in the eight-team field.
Freshman Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) continued her strong rookie campaign by once again pacing the Phoenix women in both races. Guthrie placed 18th in Saturday's 4.7K freestyle race with a time of 12:38.9 and then followed it up on Sunday by placing 21st in the 1.4K classic in 4:35.1.
In Saturday's men's 9.4K freestyle, Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) led Green Bay by placing 21st, crossing the finish line in 22:14.9. Chris Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) finished 31st in 22:48.3, followed closely by teammate Matt Nistler (Bemidji, Minn.) in 32nd (23:02.6).
Nistler then led the Phoenix on Sunday in the 1.4K classic, finishing 28th in 3:51. Matt Nichols finished one spot and one second back in 29th.
Green Bay returns to action next Saturday at the USSA Super Tour event in Minneapolis.
