Green Bay Nordic Skiers Compete at U.S. Cross Country Championships
RUMFORD, Maine (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After a weather-delayed start to the week, the Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams wrapped up their second day of races at the U.S. Cross Country Championships on Thursday at historic Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine.
Four Phoenix men and a pair of Phoenix women are competing in the national event, as Wayne Clark (New Paltz, N.Y.), Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.), Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.), Matt Nistler (Bemidji, Minn.), Hanne Guthrie (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) each made the trip.
Gurney paced the Phoenix men on Thursday in the 15K freestyle race by finishing 103rd in the tough field of competitors. The sophomore crossed the line in 33:49.9, while Nichols was close behind in 112th (34:14.7). Guthrie finished 82nd in the women's 10K freestyle, turning in a time of 29:42.2.
"I thought Eddie, Matt and Hanne skied very well today," Phoenix head coach Ken Statz said. "Eddie and Matt were about three and a half minutes back from the lead, which is very impressive for young athletes doing a 15K at nationals."
The Phoenix skiers will resume competition tomorrow with the men's 30K and women's 5K classic races. Nichols, who is 17 years old, will also be competing in Friday's junior 10K race.
Green Bay began the U.S. Championships on Tuesday with the men's 1.6K and women's 1.4K freestyle sprint races. Complete results from all the races at Black Mountain can be found here.
