GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Head coach Debbie Kirch has announced that four players have committed to play their college
volleyball at Green Bay beginning in 2012. Mikaela
Gunderson (Casco, Wis.), Sophie Jaskulske (Maplewood, Minn.), Becca
Mastay (Pulaski, Wis.) and Stefanie Siroin (Herbster, Wis.) will all join the Phoenix roster next fall
after standout high school careers.
"Overall, this is a very athletic group that we are
adding to our program," Kirch said. "Most of them are multi-sport athletes in
high school. The class covers just about every position on the floor and is a
class that can make an impact in many areas for us.
"There are also two local kids, which is great for us
and for the area. This class shows that volleyball is continuing to improve in
the Green Bay area."
Gunderson is a 5-foot-11 middle hitter from
Luxemburg-Casco High School who also plays club volleyball for the FC Elite
Volleyball Club. The two-year team captain has been a four-year starter and has
twice been named the Bay Conference Player of the Year and a three-time
all-conference performer. She has helped her high school to two regional
championships. A member of the 1,000-kill club at Luxemburg-Casco High School,
she is a third-team all-state honoree.
"Mikaela is a great athlete," said Kirch. "Despite her
5-foot-11 stature, she has proven that she can be successful in the middle
because of her speed, strength and jumping ability. She also has the ability to
help us on the rightside as well. It's always nice to add local talent to the
roster. We always want to keep the best players from the area here at Green
Bay."
A 6-foot middle hitter from Maplewood, Minn.,
Jaskulske attends St. Paul North High School and plays for the Kokoro
Volleyball Club. Jaskulske is a four-year varsity player that has been named
all-conference twice and her team MVP as both a junior and a senior. She was
named Academic All-State as a senior and has been a consistent member of the
Honor Roll.
"Sophie is extremely strong physically and has great
blocking instincts and technique which you do not see very much at the high
school level," said Kirch. "Despite playing middle most of her career, she has
developed into a very good all-around volleyball player who could also help us
on the right side."
A native of Pulaski, Mastey is a 5-foot-5 libero who
plays at Notre Dame High School in Green Bay. Mastey also plays club volleyball
with Gunderson on FC Elite Volleyball Club. She has helped her team to two
conference and two regional championships and is a four-time all-conference
selection. Mastey has also been a two-time honorable mention all-state nominee.
"Becca is one of the most polished volleyball players
to come out of the Green Bay area," Kirch said. "Her ball control technique is
incredible and she has played the libero position at a high level for the
majority of her career. She has all the qualities you look for in a libero -
quickness, technique and leadership. We have had a long line of excellent
liberos in our program, and we are excited to have Becca who can continue that
tradition."
Siroin is a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Herbster,
Wis. who attends Washburn High School and plays for the Minnesota North
Volleyball Club. She is a four-time all-conference player who was named
all-state honorable mention in 2010 and 2011. Siroin is a two-time team captain
at Washburn.
"Stefanie is a terminating outside hitter," said
Kirch. "Because of her height, she'll not only help offensively, but
defensively as well. The great thing about Stefanie is we originally recruited
her as a three-rotation player, but she has made great strides in her passing
and defense over the last year and is developing into a six-rotation outside
hitter. We are excited have her join our program next fall."
