GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
volleyball team begins its quest for a 2011 Horizon League Championship on
Friday night, when the sixth-seeded Phoenix (11-17, 7-9 HL) takes on
third-seeded Butler (15-13, 11-5 HL) at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
Butler swept a pair of matches against the Phoenix in
2011, winning 3-0 in Indianapolis on Oct. 9 and claiming a 3-2 decision at the Kress
Center on Nov. 3. In the most
recent match against the Bulldogs, senior Abbey Gitter (Hortonville, Wis.) had 13 kills and helped the
Phoenix rally from a 2-0 deficit, but Butler won the fifth set 15-10.
Gitter and junior Brittany
Groth (Oak Creek, Wis.) were named
to the All-Horizon League teams this week. It marked the first such honor
for both players. Butler also had two players - Maureen Bamiro and Maggie
Harbison - named to all-conference.
Groth continues to lead the Horizon League in digs per
set and also ranks tied for 10th nationally in that category. The junior libero
broke
the single-season school record for digs against Youngstown State on Nov.
11 and now has 632 this season. With 11 more digs she will pass Milwaukee's
Lauren Felsing for the third most in Horizon League history.
