GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
women's soccer team (3-8-3, 1-2-1) begins the second half of its Horizon League
schedule Sunday afternoon as it welcomes Wright State (5-6-2, 0-2-1) to Santaga
Stadium for a 12 p.m. CT kickoff. It will be an important match for both squads
as they try to pick up points to qualify for the league tournament.
The Phoenix is currently holding onto the sixth and
final spot in the Horizon League Tournament, while Wright State is still
looking for its first conference win, sitting in eighth place.
LAST WEEK: Green Bay enters Sunday's contest coming off a 0-0
double overtime tie against Loyola Wednesday night at Santaga Stadium. Senior
goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton,
Wis.) registered seven saves in the contest for her fourth shutout of the
season.
"The tie doesn't hurt us," Phoenix head
coach Trevor Warren said after the
match. "Loyola is a team that has historically outplayed us, and we were
able to play them straight up tonight. We defended well and we showed a lot of
heart and a lot of grit. We just needed that last little pass or that last
little through ball to get on the board."
The Raiders aim to snap a three-match losing streak on
Sunday, coming off a 4-2 loss at Creighton on Wednesday.
THE SERIES: Green Bay is looking for its first win against the
Raiders since the 2005 season - a 1-0 victory at Santaga Stadium. WSU leads the
all-time series 12-5-3 and has won the last four meetings, including a 3-0 win
in Dayton last season.
BETWEEN THE
POSTS: Sunday's match will feature
two of the Horizon League's top goalkeepers in Drusch and WSU's Brooke McCurdy.
Drusch, Green Bay's all-time leader in saves (364 career, 80 this year), owns a
0.86 goals against average, the second-best in the conference. McCurdy has
turned away 68 shots this season, second only to Drusch.
HOME SWEET
HOME: The Phoenix has played well on
its home turf this season, earning all three of its victories at Santaga
Stadium (3-2-2). Since Warren's arrival in 2008, Green Bay has posted an 11-8-10
record at home. In addition, seven of the team's eight goals on the year have
been scored in Green Bay.
PLAYER TO WATCH: On Monday TopDrawerSoccer.com released its list of
Top-20 Players to Watch in the Horizon League, with Green Bay sophomore Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland)
making the list at No. 18. The forward leads the Phoenix in points this season
with nine (3 goals, 3 assists) - a total that ranks 17th in the conference.
RECORD BREAKER: Drusch became the school's all-time
saves leader in a 2-1 win over Cleveland State on Sept. 25. The senior stopped
five shots on goal to run her career saves total to 355, surpassing former
Phoenix standout Laura Sandt (352, 1994-97) in the record books. For her
efforts, Drusch was selected as the Horizon League's Co-Player of the Week,
along with Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen. Her career total is currently at 364.
