SOUTH BEND, Ind.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After a week off from competition, the Green Bay men's and women's cross
country teams competed in the 56th annual Notre Dame Invitational held at the Notre
Dame Cross Country course on Friday. The race featured five schools from the Horizon
League including Youngstown State, Valparaiso, UIC, UW-Milwaukee and Green Bay.
Runners battled tough conditions all day, as
temperatures dipped into the low 50's and winds blew at 20-30 mph with top
gusts reaching 40 mph and above. Due to severe rain in the area over the last
week, the course was extremely wet, with soft spots throughout.
The women's
team finished ahead of in-state, Horizon League rival Milwaukee while being
edged out by Youngstown State, Valparaiso and UIC respectively. As a team the
Phoenix finished in 18th place with junior Lauren Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.) pacing
the way in 59th place with a time of 19:04. Mauel's finish was the
sixth-fastest among Horizon League competitors in the field of 170 runners.
Junior Areanna
Lakowske (Sparta, Wis.) finished in 94th place with a time of 19:51 while Nicole
Will (Luxemburg, Wis.) and Erica Johnson (Felch, Mich.) crossed the line in
20:14 and 20:17 respectively. Rounding out the top five team places for Green
Bay was junior Annie Dehmlow (Forest Lake, Minn.) who finished with a time of 21:53.
As a team,
Green Bay placed 18th with 501 points.
On the men's
side, sophomore Alex Kimble (Green Bay, Wis.) led the Phoenix with a time of
27:21 while senior Josh Clark (Gillett, Wis.) crossed the line in 27:52. Four
Green Bay runners were separated by 18 seconds. Junior Billy Lobner (Wisconsin
Rapids, Wis.) finished the course with a time of 29:06 followed by freshman Andrew
Sorenson (Onalaska, Wis.) in 29:07, Erik Blomsness (Winona, Minn.) in 29:12 and
Steve Wagner (Seymour, Wis.) in 29:24.
As a team,
the Phoenix finished in 19th place with a total of 609 points.
Green Bay
will have one more meet of competition to prepare for the Horizon League
Championship on Oct. 29. The Phoenix will compete at the Bradley Classic
Friday, Oct. 14 in Peoria, Ill.
