GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's soccer team (3-7-2, 1-1-0) looks
for its second consecutive Horizon League win on Saturday when it travels to
Detroit (8-4-1, 1-1-0) for a 12 p.m. CT kickoff at Titan Field.
The
contest pits one of the league's best defenses in Green Bay against the
conference's most high-powered offense in Detroit. The Phoenix has surrendered
just 11 goals in 12 matches this season, while the Titans have knocked in a
league-best 38 goals in 13 games.
Detroit
has controlled the all-time series against Green Bay, holding a 16-2-3
advantage. However, the Phoenix has found success against the Titans under head
coach Trevor Warren, going 1-0-2 in his three seasons with the team.
Each of the last two meetings ended in draws, including a 1-1 tie at Santaga
Stadium last season.
LAST WEEK: The Phoenix enters
Saturday's match coming off a 2-1 win over Cleveland State on Sunday as part of
Alumni Weekend at Santaga Stadium. Sophomore Ahna Logan (Roseville,
Minn.) and senior Corey Arno (Winneconne, Wis.) each scored their first
goals of the season in the victory. Sophomore Hekla Palmadottir
(Akranes, Iceland) assisted Arno's goal for her team-high ninth point of the
year (3 goals, 3 assists).
The
Titans, who are ranked ninth the Great Lakes Region, dropped a 2-1 result at
first-place Milwaukee (10-1-0) on Sunday after defeating Oakland 3-1 in their
most recent home match on Thursday, Sept. 22. Senior midfielder Lauren Roffey
led Detroit past the Grizzlies with a pair of goals, including the game-winner.
RECORD BREAKER: Green
Bay goalkeeper Maddie Drusch (Appleton, Wis.) became the school's
all-time saves leader in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Vikings. The senior stopped
five shots on goal to run her career saves total to 355, surpassing former
Phoenix standout Laura Sandt (352, 1994-97) in the record books. For her
efforts, Drusch was selected as the Horizon League's Co-Player of the Week,
along with Milwaukee's Sarah Hagen.
IN THE
RANKINGS: Both
the Phoenix and the Titans are among the nation's leaders in several
statistical categories according to the most recent NCAA rankings released on
Sept. 25. Green Bay: Ranks 21st among 330 Division I schools in team
save percentage (87.2) ... Drusch ranks ninth in total saves (71) and 20th in
save percentage (87.7) Detroit: Ranks 11th in scoring offense (2.92
goals per game) ... Sophomore Abby McCollum ranks first in the NCAA in assists (8)
GETTING
DEFENSIVE: The
Phoenix has not allowed more than a single goal in each of its last 10
contests. In all, Green Bay has given up just 11 goals in 12 matches in 2011.
