WATERLOO, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The Green Bay women's tennis
team continued its fall season over the weekend at the Northern Iowa
Invitational, held at Byrnes Park in Waterloo, Iowa. The Phoenix faced
some strong competition in the three-day, 10-team
event in the team's first event under new head coach Sara Schubring.
The tournament was
divided into four singles brackets and two doubles brackets. The Phoenix
competed against opponents from Bradley, Drake, Minnesota, South
Dakota, North Dakota, Missouri, Northern Iowa,
Milwaukee and Iowa State.
In the main draw of the No. 2 Gold Doubles bracket, junior
Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) and Mandy Timm
(Milwaukee, Wis.) teamed up to earn an 8-4 win over South Dakota's pair
of Barudzic/Kiefer. Nelson and Timm fell in the second round to Drake
duo of Rebol/Aguilera 8-4.
Also in No. 2 Gold Doubles, Green Bay's team of
Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) and Sami Iwen (De Pere, Wis.) advanced to the final match of the consolation bracket, but ended up falling to Barudzic and Kiefer 8-2.
In individual play,
Anderson made it all the way through the consolation bracket at No. 3
Silver Singles, earning a 6-3, 7-6 win over Minnesota's Elianna Kantar
in the title match.
Nelson made it to
the final consolation match at No. 4 Bronze Singles, beating South
Dakota's Maddy Warder (6-2, 6-3) before dropping a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6
decision to Bradley's Cassie Wojtalik. Senior
Morgan Weuve (Green Bay, Wis.) also picked up a win over Iowa State's Caroline Anderson in the No. 2 Gold Singles consolation bracket.
