GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Highlighted by over 40 student-athletes walking across
the stage at commencement ceremonies Saturday at the Kress Center, Green Bay
Athletics was well-represented this weekend during UW-Green Bay graduation
events. At Saturday's commencement, Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) shared
her thoughts on her time in college as the class speaker.
Tetschlag,
a four-year standout on the Green Bay women's basketball team, was selected by
the Office of the Provost for her distinguished honor. A business
administration major with minors in Spanish and international business,
Tetschlag graduated magna cum laude. She finished her career on the women's
basketball team this past March by leading the squad to the Sweet 16 of the
NCAA Tournament after being named the co-Horizon League Player of the Year.
Numerous
student-athletes were also honored on Friday night at the University Leadership
Awards Program. Jeff Cook (Rhinelander, Wis.), a member of
the Green Bay Nordic ski team, was awarded the Outstanding Student Award by the
UW-Green Bay Alumni Association. Cook graduated Saturday summa cum laude after
completing majors in environmental policy and planning, political science and
public administration.
Of
the 30 students awarded the Chancellor's Leadership Medallion, seven were
connected to Green Bay Athletics. The receipients included Tetschlag and Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) of
the women's basketball team, Regina Elmer (Stillwater, Minn.) of the women's
Nordic ski team, Travis Mathers (Baraboo, Wis.) and Allison Thut (Green Bay, Wis.) of the swimming and diving teams, Leah Korger, previously of the softball team, and Steven Teclaw, who
served as a volunteer assistant coach on the men's Nordic ski team. The
medallions acknowledge both academic excellence and leadership demonstrated
throughout the students' careers on campus.
University
Leadership Awards were also handed out on Friday, with seven student-athletes
and a team manager receiving the honor given to those who contributed to the
growth and development of a student organization and/or exhibited a commitment
to community service. Honorees included: Josh
Bautch (Wausau, Wis.) of men's
soccer, Dustin Dietrich (Kiel, Wis.) of men's swimming and diving, Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.) and Lindsey Marshall (Shoreview, Minn.) of
women's Nordic Ski, Karli Koralewski (Muskego, Wis.) and Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.), Hannah
Quilling (Eau Claire, Wis.) of women's
basketball and women's basketball manager Nellie
Schafer.
