GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay men's tennis sophomore Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) has
been tabbed as the Horizon League Player of the Week for the week beginning
Feb. 24, the conference office announced on Tuesday. It marks the first career
award for Finkenbrink, who shares the honor this week with Wright State's Brian
Dredge.
Finkenbrink
led the Phoenix to a 2-1 record in a three-day span last week, defeating IPFW
7-0 and Eastern Illinois 6-1, while falling to Big Ten opponent Purdue 6-1.
"Erik has really performed well in both singles and doubles for us this season," Green Bay head coach Mark Thomas said. "Not only is he a great player on the court, but he's a great student as well, earning a 3.8 GPA last semester. I look forward to seeing Erik continue to develop his game and further academic success."
On
Sunday against Eastern Illinois in Milwaukee, Finkenbrink defeated Michael
Sperry 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles and also teamed up with classmate Josh Oothoudt (Minot, N.D.) in the top
doubles spot to defeat Matyas Hilgert and Jamie Firth 8-6.
The
pair of Finkenbrink and Oothoudt won Green Bay's lone doubles match on Saturday
at Purdue, defeating the Boilermakers' team of Mark Kovacs and Eric Ramos
8-7(7-5).
Finkenbrink
was a two-time winner on Friday at IPFW, coming from behind to beat Roberto
Cabrini 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 at No. 1 singles after teaming up with Oothoudt to win
in the No. 2 doubles slot 8-6 over the tandem of Dqaniel Kang and Junya Saruta.
The
6-3 Green Bay men's tennis team heads to Madison for a contest with its
in-state rivals from Wisconsin on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by its Horizon League
opener on Saturday at UIC at 7 p.m.
