GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving
teams played host to their in-state Horizon League rivals from Milwaukee on
Saturday afternoon in a highly-anticipated regular season finale at the
Dorschel Natatorium. The Phoenix prevailed on the women's side, earning a
132-111 victory over the Panthers, while Milwaukee took the men's competition
170-73.
With
the win, the Phoenix women finish the year with an 11-2 record in dual meets.
The men's squad enters the Horizon League Championship meet with an 8-4 mark in
head-to-head competition.
Senior
Shannon Demrow (Algonquin, Ill.) had
an outstanding day for the Phoenix women, breaking a pool record in the
200-yard butterfly. Demrow cruised to a first-place finish with a time of
2:06.86 - the fastest ever recorded at the Dorschel Natatorium. Demrow also
picked up a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:54.49), following
junior teammate Amy Burback
(Waunakee, Wis.), who won in 1:54.27.
Senior
Deanna DeGrand (Green Bay, Wis.) and
freshman Kendra Rottier (Green Bay,
Wis.) dominated the distance races on Saturday, as the hometown duo went 1-2 in
the 1000 and 500 freestyles. DeGrand earned a win in the 1000 (10:21.22), while
Rottier placed second in 10:24.33. The two switched places in the 500, as Rottier
won with a time of 5:06.77, narrowly edging DeGrand (5:06.81).
Two
of the league's best female divers faced off in the meet as Green Bay's Kayla Deters (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and
Milwaukee's Kelsey George each earned wins Saturday. Deters won the 1-meter
competition with a score of 255.75, while George finished second with a score
of 243.30. On the 3-meter board, George picked up the win (278.55) with Deters
coming in second at 240.23.
Senior
Alyssa Danielson (Rogers, Minn.)
also notched a win for the Phoenix women, taking the 100 free with a time of
53.02.
On
the men's side, junior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm,
Minn.) had yet another career day on the diving boards. The two-time defending
Horizon League Diver of the Week swept the diving events on Saturday, posting
the highest scores ever recorded in the 1-meter and 3-meter events in a
six-dive format at the Dorschel Natatorium.
Pogue
accumulated 337.80 points in the 1-meter competition, followed by a score of
342.45 on the 3-meter board to dominate the rest of the field. Sophomore
teammate Mitchell Spaeth (Fredonia,
Wis.) also had a career day on the boards, posting a personal best score of 300.38
to place second in the 3-meter competition.
Senior
Ryan Loy (New London, Wis.) had a
strong day for the Green Bay men's squad, earning a second-place finish in the
50 free (21.63) and a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:56.81).
The
Green Bay swimming and diving teams are next in action at the 2011 Horizon
League Championships, held Feb. 23-26 in Cleveland, Ohio, with the Phoenix
women aiming for their seventh consecutive conference crown.
