GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After a full day of competition at the Peter F.
Dorschel Natatorium on Saturday, the Green Bay men's and women's swimming and
diving teams finished with an unbeaten record against competitors from
Youngstown State, Illinois State and Illinois Tech.
The
women's squad posted a 2-0 record Saturday, defeating Youngstown State and
Illinois State in a double-dual meet. The Phoenix earned a 233-67 win over the
Penguins of the Horizon League, while beating the Redbirds 191-109 to improve
to 10-2 in dual meets this season.
The
Green Bay men picked up a victory against Illinois Tech following the women's
meet, finishing with a 135-87 advantage. The Phoenix is now 8-3 in dual
competition for the season.
"I
was very happy with how we swam today," Phoenix head coach Jim Merner said. "I
thought we had some really strong performances across the board, especially
given where we're at in our training."
Illinois
State's women won their dual meet against Youngstown, cruising to a 230-70
victory. The Illinois Tech women also competed in exhibition action on the
women's side, not counting toward the final results.
Standing
out for the Phoenix women's team was sophomore Taylor Trelka (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), who earned first-place finishes
in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Trelka finished the 50 free in
24.51, and then cruised to a winning time of 53.50 in the 100 free.
Also
having strong outings for Green Bay were junior Amber Bartholomew (Alexandria, Minn.) and senior Shannon Demrow (Algonquin, Ill.).
Bartholomew picked up wins in the 200 backstroke (2:08.79) and 200 IM
(2:10.07), while Demrow won the 200 free (1:54.97) and also helped Green Bay's
400 free relay to a first-place finish (3:36.41).
Highlighting
the men's win was a career-day by sophomore Andrew Lindstrom (Vulcan, Mich.). Lindstrom won the 200 backstroke
in 2:12.03 and also posted a time of 1:58.61 in the 200 IM, both of which were
lifetime bests.
Seniors
Tim Scanlan (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and
Ryan Loy (New London, Wis.) also had
strong performances for the Phoenix men, as Scanlan earned a win in the 500
free (4:44.56) and Loy won the 50 free (21.66) and 200 butterfly (1:55.46).
On
the diving boards, junior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm,
Minn.) and sophomore Mitchell Spaeth (Fredonia,
Wis.) earned wins for the Phoenix men, while senior Kayla Deters (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) also recorded a first-place
finish on the women's side. Pogue took the 1-meter event with a score of
313.55, Spaeth won the 3-meter board with a total of 274.15 and Deters clinched
the women's 3-meter with a score of 255.10.
The
Green Bay swimming and diving teams wrap up the regular season next Saturday
when the Phoenix squads play host to in-state conference rival Milwaukee at the
Dorschel Natatorium at 2 p.m. It will be the final tune-up before the Horizon
League Championships, held Feb. 23-26 in Cleveland, Ohio.
