MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams continued their 2010-11 season over the weekend at the Mayor's Challenge at the Theodore Wirth Trails. The Phoenix skiers battled frigid temperatures and some of the Central Collegiate Ski Association's toughest competition at the most recent SuperTour stop in Minneapolis.

On Saturday, Green Bay senior Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.) took fourth overall and second in the CCSA in the women's 5K freestyle race, finishing with a time of 14:23.1. Freeman followed with a seventh-place outing on Sunday in the 10K classic event, crossing the finish line in 31:59.4.

"Carolyn is exactly where she needs to be right now," Phoenix assistant coach Steve Teclaw said. "She is happy with the competition around her, and is confident about her points. It's allowed her to be loose and race her own race. Right now we are just working on getting her routine nailed down so she'll be ready for the big races in Vermont later this season."

Newcomer Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) also had a strong weekend for the Green Bay women's team. The freshman placed 12th in Saturday's freestyle (15:04.3) and ninth in Sunday's classic race (32:18.8).

On the men's side, senior Nick Maki (Aurora, Minn.) led the way for the Phoenix Saturday, placing 36th in the 10K freestyle (26:29.6). On Sunday, sophomore Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) was Green Bay's top finisher, finishing in 25th (42:25.6).

Green Bay is back in action this Saturday and Sunday at the SuperTour races in Houghton, Mich. It will serve as the final tune-up before the CCSA Conference Ski Championships on Feb. 12.
