GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving
teams squared off against in-state rival Wisconsin Saturday afternoon at the
Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium in a non-conference dual meet. Both Phoenix squads
competed well, but the Big Ten opponents were too strong as the Badgers
finished with a 166-112 win on the women's side and a 179-110 result in the men's
competition.
The
Wisconsin women entered the meet ranked 16th in the nation. With the losses, the
Phoenix women are now 8-2 on the year in dual meets, while the men move to 7-3.
The
morning diving events were highlighted by strong performances from men's junior
Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.) and
women's divers Kayla Deters (Sauk
Rapids, Minn.) and Carrie Dinelli (Northbrook,
Ill.), who each earned individual victories.
Pogue
posted a giant number on the 3-meter board, totaling 340.05 points for the
first-place finish. The score was Pogue's personal best, and was the highest
score ever recorded in a dual meet at the Dorschel Natatorium. Pogue also
placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 281.48.
In
the women's 3-meter diving competition, Dinelli earned 234.30 points en route
to her first-career victory. The freshman edged out her senior teammate Deters
on the high board, who won the 1-meter competition with a score of 234.08.
Senior Jason Askew (Durban, South Africa) had
a solid day for the Phoenix men's team, placing second in the 100-yard (57.86)
and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.79) events. Classmate Ryan Loy (New London, Wis.) had a strong showing in the 100
butterfly, placing a close second to Wisconsin's Garrett Mulchrone (51.18) with
a time of 51.77.
Phoenix
sophomore Tyler Evans (Lodi, Wis.)
was narrowly edged out by the Badgers' Michael Weiss in the 100 freestyle, as
Weiss finished with a time of 47.11, while Evans followed in 47.53.
On
the women's side, senior Shannon Demrow
(Algonquin, Ill.) earned a close second-place finish in the 200 fly, touching
in at 2:08.46 behind Wisconsin's Karlyn Hougan (2:07.64).
The Green Bay swimming and diving teams continue
their homestand next Saturday, as Youngstown State, Illinois State and IIT
visit the Dorschel Natatorium for women's competition at noon, while the IIT
men square off against the Phoenix at 2 p.m.
