CHICAGO (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's swimming and diving
teams were in action on Saturday at UIC, as the Phoenix women defeated the
Flames 137-105, while the men fell to their Horizon League rivals 135-104. The
women's squad improved to 7-1 in dual meets this season, while the men now own
a 6-2 dual record.
Leading
the way for the Phoenix women were senior Deanna DeGrand (Green Bay, Wis.) and junior Amy Burback (Waunakee, Wis.), who each won a pair of individual races. DeGrand
picked up wins in the 1000-yard (10:27.52) and 500-yard (5:08.03) freestyle
races, while Burback was victorious in both the 200 free (1:56.64) and 200
breaststroke (2:22.28).
Junior
Amber Bartholomew (Alexandria,
Minn.) also raced to a first-place finish Saturday, taking the 200-yard IM with
a time of 2:09.46.
Senior
Kayla Deters (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and
freshman Merissa Gatti (Lakeville,
Minn.) combined to sweep the women's diving events, as Deters placed first in
the 3-meter dive with a score of 276.45 and Gatti won the 1-meter board by
posting a score of 242.55.
Earning
wins on the men's side were senior Jason Askew (Durban, South Africa) and junior Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.). Askew swam to a victory in the 200
breast, finishing in 2:08.30, while Pogue continued his strong campaign on the
boards, winning the 1-meter event with a score of 298.13.
After
more than two months without a home meet, the Phoenix men and women will return
to the Dorschel Natatorium to host Western Illinois on Friday. It will be Green
Bay's first home meet since hosting St. Cloud State on Nov. 13 and the first of
five in a row at the Dorschel Natatorium.
