RUMFORD, Maine (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - A trio of Green Bay Nordic skiers began competition at the 2011 U.S. Cross Country Championships on Sunday, as senior Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.), sophomore Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) and freshman Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) each participated in races at Black Mountain.

Freeman had a strong showing in the 1.4K classic qualifier, placing 13th out of 138 skiers with a time of 4:07.60. Mucha also competed in the qualifier, finishing 47th with a time of 4:24.73. Mucha also competed in the junior girls sprint race, placing third.

The distance classic races have been postponed due to rain and warm temperatures. The races are currently scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 5. Freeman and Mucha are both set to compete Wednesday in the women's 10K heat.
