RUMFORD, Maine (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - A trio of Green Bay Nordic skiers began competition at the 2011 U.S. Cross Country Championships
on Sunday, as senior Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.), sophomore
Eddie Gurney (Brookfield, Wis.) and freshman Kailey Mucha (Soldotna, Alaska) each participated in races at Black Mountain.
Freeman
had a strong showing in the 1.4K classic qualifier, placing 13th out of
138 skiers with a time of 4:07.60. Mucha also competed in the
qualifier, finishing 47th with a time
of 4:24.73. Mucha also competed in the junior girls sprint race,
placing third.
Gurney,
the lone men's skier representing Green Bay, raced in the men's
qualifier, finishing 98th overall with a time of 3:44.99.
The
distance classic races have been postponed due to rain and warm
temperatures. The races are currently scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 5.
Freeman and Mucha are both set to compete
Wednesday in the women's 10K heat.
