IRONWOOD, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's and women's Nordic skiing teams
continued the 2010-11 campaign over the weekend, competing at the USSA Junior
Qualifier at the Wolverine Ski Trails in Ironwood, Mich. Senior Carolyn Freeman (Ely, Minn.) had a
strong weekend for the Phoenix women, winning the 5K freestyle event and
placing third in the 10K classic.
One
week after winning her first collegiate race (5K skate at the Michigan Tech
Challenge), Freeman cruised to another victory on Saturday, placing first in
the 5K freestyle with a time of 14:08.7. Classmate Lindsey Marshall (Shoreview, Minn.) also had a strong showing on
Saturday, placing sixth in 15:06.5.
On
Sunday, Freeman placed third in the 10K classic race, finishing in 34:06.1, 32
seconds off the winning pace. Marshall placed eighth, crossing the finish line
in 35:35.8.
Senior
Jeff Cook (Rhinelander, Wis.) was
Green Bay's top performer on the men's side over the weekend, placing 21st in
the 10K freestyle (26:46.3) on Saturday and 11th in the 10K classic (30:35.6)
on Sunday. Fellow senior Nick Maki
(Aurora, Minn.) finished one spot behind Cook on Saturday, placing 22nd in
26:57.4, followed by a 20th-place finish on Sunday (31:43.2).
Former
Phoenix standout Santi Ocariz also competed independently, winning both the
freestyle (23:39.8) and classic (27:36.4) events.
The
Phoenix teams are next in action Jan. 2-8 in Rumford, Maine at the U.S.
National Championships.
