EAST LANSING, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team continued its fall
season over the weekend at the Stan Drobac Invitational, hosted by Michigan
State. The Phoenix went head-to-head with Morehead State, Detroit and Xavier on
Friday and Saturday before wrapping up singles and doubles action on Sunday
against competition from Michigan State and Ball State.
Green
Bay had a strong showing on Friday, earning wins in seven of eight singles
matches as well as three of the four doubles matches against Horizon League foe
Detroit. Junior Paul Swanson (Coon
Rapids, Minn.) won at No. 1 singles, defeating Alex Latosinsky 6-3, 6-1. Senior
Fabian Gogolin (Cologne, Germany)
teamed up with sophomore Craig Cox
(Surrey, England) at the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat the Titans duo of Chris
Chueng and David Stabley 9-8 (3).
On
Saturday, the Phoenix took five of its six singles matches against Morehead State,
as Swanson again won in the No. 1 singles slot. Swanson defeated Eagles junior Bradley
Bryan 6-0, 6-0. Green Bay also earned four wins in its competition with Xavier
on Saturday - three in singles action as well as one doubles match.
The
Phoenix faced strong competition on Sunday, taking on players from Michigan
State and Ball State. Green Bay earned five victories on the final day of the
invite, winning a pair of doubles matches and three singles matches. Sophomore Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) and
Swanson teamed up to defeat the Ball State pair of Andres Monroy and Derek Carpenter 9-8 in No. 2 doubles. At No. 5
singles, Gogolin earned a win over Shaun Bussert 6-3, 6-2.
Green Bay will continue its fall slate at the ITA
Regionals Oct. 21-24 at Notre Dame University.
