First Week of Competition in the Books

EDITOR'S NOTE: David Prochazka's blog, Swede's Read, gives Phoenix fans an inside look at Green Bay men's soccer both on and off the field. A senior defender, Prochazka hails from Gothenburg, Sweden and last season led the league in assists (1.20 pg), becoming a First Team All-League selection. Prochazka helped lead Green Bay to its first ever Horizon League Tournament championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 26 years. Prochazka will keep fans updated on all things Green Bay soccer throughout the season as the Phoenix looks to build on its historical 2009 season.

Sitting here and trying to summarize the first week of soccer season. After a solid win against DePaul on Wednesday night, three days had passed and Oregon State was next on turn. Our hopes and expectations have from the very first day been to extend our unbeaten home run another season, and thus proving Aldo Santaga Stadium to be one of the toughest fields for opponents to come to. Ultimately, we strive towards winning the Horizon League and host the playoffs, which can be everything but a pleasant experience for our conference rivals in early November.

Despite outshooting Oregon State 19-7, we were unable to take advantage of our chances against a strong defensive team and lost 2-1. We do not have anyone else to blame but ourselves. Although all the players were upset when the final whistle had blown, it is still early in the season and there is lots of time for us to improve. Last year, we finished as the best offensive team in the entire U.S., and the foundation for a similar season has been laid - now it is up to us to fulfill those goals.

This upcoming week we prepare for 2010's longest road trip when we leave on Thursday morning for Missouri for two important games. On Friday night, we face Missouri State, an NCAA tournament team from last year, and Saturday we travel to Oklahoma before playing Tulsa on Sunday and wrapping up our first away games of the season. I promise to update you with memorable moments from this trip, and one or two insider stories as well... Ha en underbar vecka!
