School? When did that happen?

It seems like August just flew by! We are already into September, and classes have finally started. It is crazy how my 2nd academic year is beginning so soon! Feels like just yesterday I was getting ready for my first year of college.  During our team academic meeting last week, we talked to the freshmen about our standards and what "Our Way" is in the classroom. It was a great way to get everyone on the same page, and to make sure we all were prepared for the semester.

The first day of classes began last Thursday, and we just so happened to be leaving for Drake that day! We were able to make all of our classes, but we left immediately after them for another weekend of volleyball in the state of Iowa. Some people had to miss their first Friday classes of the year, but that is the life of a D1 athlete. Thank you to all the professors for being so understanding!

Planning ahead is going to be a big part of our academic success this year because we will be on the road A LOT. I know our team will very good about that though. All of the girls are very dedicated and are already showing that they want to be successful in the classroom. The freshmen were caught reading the book Soul of a Citizen for their freshman seminars on the bus over the weekend, and there were many other girls getting ahead on their studies as well! Abbey even had a headlight with her. I'm sure it was for her to use for reading in the dark...talk about dedication.

We earned our first win of the season against Southern Utah on Saturday. It felt awesome! After all our hard work in preseason, it was about time we got a victory -- we earned it. We worked together as a team, and everyone played a role in the success we had. The next day we went on to play South Dakota State, and won an exciting 5-set match. Even though we were not playing in the Iowa State arena because of the flooding, we didn't let that affect us. We played at Ames High School, and we won at Ames High School. Great job ladies!

These two victories are very important for our team because they are getting us off to a successful season. Every win is important, and these two really pumped us up to go kick some butt in Iowa this coming weekend!
