GREEN BAY, Wis. (WWW.GREENBAYPHOENIX.COM) - The
Green Bay men's soccer team will kick off its 2010 regular season Wednesday,
Sept. 1 hosting DePaul at 7 p.m. The Phoenix wrapped up exhibition play over
the weekend with a 2-2 tie at Eastern Illinois.
Wednesday is also Campus Appreciation Night at Aldo Santaga
Stadium. Everyone with a campus ID will receive free admission to the game
along with the ever-popular and loud thunder sticks.
In last season's exciting home opener against Northwestern,
Green Bay came from behind 2-0 to finish with a 3-3 tie against the No. 9
Wildcats. Head coach Tom Poitras and the Phoenix credited the crowd and their
enthusiasm for the end result. "What a crowd. The student section was great
and really helped the guys keep battling," Poitras said after the game. "Santaga
Stadium is a fun place to play with an atmosphere like tonight."
All students and fans are encouraged to come out and support
the Phoenix as it kicks off the season and works towards a second consecutive
trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last season Green Bay won the program's first
Horizon League Tournament Championship where goalie Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) earned tournament MVP honors.
The Phoenix looks to have another strong season as Herman
Trophy candidate Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Preseason Second Team
All-American JC Banks (Milwaukee, Wis.) will captain Green Bay. On the
defensive side of the ball, senior David Prochazka (Gothenburg, Sweden) will
look to lead the Phoenix.
Green Bay is 3-3-2 all-time against DePaul and 1-2-1 under
Poitras' leadership. Finishing 5-6-0 last season, the young DePaul team wrapped
up its exhibition play Friday with a 1-0 win over UIC.
