YOUNGSTOWN,
Ohio - Senior Holly Visser (Waupun, Wis.) powered Green Bay (9-16, 4-8 HL) past
Youngstown State (7-16, 5-8) in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14) Friday
night in Horizon League volleyball action. It was the first league road win of
the season for the Phoenix and gave Green Bay its fourth victory in its last
six matches overall.
Visser
totaled a Green Bay season-high 20 kills and tacked on 17 digs for her 11th
double-double of the year. She also hit .381 on the evening to lead all attackers.
The Phoenix
battled back from a tough two-point loss in the opening set to claim
hard-fought wins in both the second and third frames. The second set featured a
dozen ties and seven lead changes before Green Bay scored five of the final six
points to claim the victory.
Green Bay utilized
a 6-1 run to turn an early 6-3 deficit into a two-point lead. The Phoenix never
relinquished the lead and hung on for a three-point win.
The fourth
set did not start well for Green Bay, as YSU scored five of the first six
points. That all changed quickly, however, after a Phoenix time out. Green Bay
knotted the score at 10-all and then scored 15 of the set's final 19 points to
roll to victory.
Whitney Schott (Roscoe, Ill.) had a double-double with 48 assists and 12 digs, while
Kelly Mischler (Kaukauna, Wis.) had six blocks.
Green Bay
swept the Penguins in the season series and is 19-5 against Youngstown State
all-time, including wins in 17 of the last 19 meetings.
The Phoenix
has completed its season road slate and now will finish the regular season with
four home games, beginning next Friday against Cleveland State.
