GREEN BAY, Wis. - Former Green Bay basketball standout Mike Schachtner
(Somerset, Wis.) has signed a professional basketball contract to play for the
Kapfenberg Bulls in Austria.
Schachtner, a 6-foot-9 forward, was a three-time Academic All-America
selection as a Phoenix, becoming the first student-athlete in school history to
do so. Green Bay's career leader in free throw accuracy (88.3 percent) and
games started (119), Schachtner scored 1,667 points in his career to rank fifth
in team history.
Over his career, he averaged 13.1 points per contest and registered 88
double-figure scoring games. Schachtner was twice named second-team all-league
and was a three-time Division I-AAA All-Scholar Team member.
During the 2008-09 campaign, he helped Green Bay to a 22-11 overall record
and a runner-up finish in the Horizon League. Schachtner's Phoenix squad also
made its first postseason appearance since 1996 and picked up a victory over 11th-rated
Butler.
Schachtner will fly to Europe on Saturday and will practice with his new
team for the first time on Monday. Kapfenberg plays in the Österreichische Basketball
Bundesliga, the highest Austrian professional basketball league.
