GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
- Sophomore Keifer Sykes
(Chicago, Ill.) had one of the most memorable of his young Phoenix career on the
biggest stage, matching his career-high with 31 points Saturday night in the Horizon
League semifinal at Valparaiso. Sykes' heroics were spoiled by a Crusader
buzzer-beater, but the Phoenix point guard was named to the Horizon League
All-Tournament Team on Tuesday night after Valpo defeated Wright State 62-54 in
the championship game.
In Green Bay's three tournament games, including wins
over Milwaukee and UIC, Sykes averaged 19.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.0
rebounds per game. The first Green Bay player to be named to the All-Horizon
League tournament team since Ryan Evanochko in 2006, Sykes made 6-of-11
three-pointers and 13-of-15 free throws.
Sykes, a First-Team All-Horizon League selection this
season, scored 21 of his 31 after halftime in Saturday's 70-69 loss. The point
guard made 11-of-20 shots from the field and 4-of-6 from long range while
adding six assists, five rebounds and two steals.
In 33 games this season, Sykes is averaging 15.8 points and
4.3 assists per game. The sophomore has reached double figures 30 times and
posted 20 or more points in eight games.
