Editor's Note: Back by popular demand. Coming off another historic
season which featured the program's record-14th consecutive regular
season Horizon League championship, as always there is a lot of
anticipation for the next season in Green Bay women's basketball. Every
Thursday throughout the summer, Assistant Director
of Athletics Communications Jill Wunrow will sit down with one player to talk
about the expectations they have for themselves for the upcoming season and
what fans can expect to see from them individually. This week we catch up with our fifth and final senior in this year's class, Jenny Gilbertson.
Senior, Jenny
Gilbertson (Wabasha, Minn.), 6'2", F
I know you've already
graduated but taking courses for your masters degree, but how does it feel to
be a senior on one of the most successful programs in women's basketball
history?
"It's an incredible
feeling. It's been a great ride with the group of us that came in together and
I'm excited to be a part of it. It
doesn't seem possible that 4 years have gone by already, but I'm looking
forward to making the most out of this year."
You have been part of
three of the 14 consecutive regular season Horizon League championships, which
is the nation's longest streak. Do you feel any pressure among you and your
classmates to lead this team to its 15th championship and not have the streak
end on your watch?
"I don't know if we
feel it as pressure, but I know we use it as a fuel inside us. It's not
something we talk about or anything, but this program is all about history and
no one wants to see that streak end."
You'll tip off your
senior campaign with a new head coach yet, a familiar face to Green Bay
basketball, what is your biggest wonder with coach Borseth and what have you
seen from him thus far that has been impressive?
"I loved his energy in
the postseason workouts we had with him. Energy is always contagious, and every
day he brought that which I feel made everyone bring it a little more in
workouts."
What are you most
looking forward to this season?
"I'm looking forward to
getting on the court and just having fun playing with my teammates. It's my
last year so I'm just trying to soak everything in."
You were voted the Most
Improved player by your teammates last season and had what was probably your
best all-around career performance at UIC last season when you sank two threes,
had two assists and one steal in nine minutes of play. How important is it for
you to have more consistent performances like that this season?
"It's very important for me to have
consistent performances. I've been working very hard to do that and I plan to
show that on the court this year.
With four starters from last season
returning, do you envision yourself earning a spot in the starting lineup and
what do you need to do to achieve that? What do you think you need to improve
most on?
"I don't really care
about whether I start or not. I want to contribute to the team whether it's
coming off the bench or starting. This summer I've been working on improving my
all around game- ball handling, shooting, driving, and mid-range shots. Defense
is also always a huge part of our success so I try to guard a lot of different
positions when we play pick up."
On the heels of
breaking into the starting lineup, there is a huge void to fill this season
with Julie graduating. What have you learned from her throughout your career
and how do you going about carrying over her play?
"Julie was a great
example of just having a motor that didn't stop. She kept going until she did
what she had to do for us to win. She led by example and I think that drive
showed us that is what we have to have in order to be successful."
What have you been
working on the most to improve your game for the 2012-13 season?
"I'm working on
everything so I can be an all around player that does a lot of things well on
the court."
What can Phoenix fans
expect from Jenny Gilbertson this season?
"Phoenix fans can
expect a lot of fun and a lot of hard work from me."
Should you have any
free time during the summer months, what do you typically spend your day doing?
"I like hanging out
with friends, soaking up some sun on the Wolf River, and relaxing when there's
time."
Favorite ice cream or
summer treat and why?
"Blue Moon ice cream.
It reminds me of when I was a kid in the summer, but I can hardly find it
anywhere in Green Bay."
